From 1962 Served as chairman of Shanghai Federation of Literary and Art Circles, subjected to rude treatment during "Cultural Revolution"
1977 - 1983 Chairman of Chinese Writers' Association, vice-chairman of China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and vice-chairman of CPPCC Shanghai Municipal Committee
1983 - present Vice-Chairman of CPPCC National Committee and chairman of Chinese Writers' Association.
He was a delegate to 1st CPPCC Plenary Session, vice-chairman of 6th to 9th CPPCC National Committees; a deputy to 1st to 5th National People's Congresses (NPC) and a member of 5th NPC Standing Committee.
He passed away on October 17, 2005.
