1947  Moved to Hong Kong with his entire family

1960  Graduated from University of Liverpool (UK) with a B.S. degree in Marine Engineering and began to work for General Electric Co., Ltd. (U.S.A.)and his family firm

1969  Returned to Hong Kong to help manage his family-operated business

1985 Became member of Consultative Committee for Basic Law of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of People's Republic of China

1992  Became one of Hong Kong Affairs Advisers of the first group invited by Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of State Council and Xinhua News Agency Hong Kong Branch

October 1992  Became member of Executive Council of British Hong Kong Government

December 1995  Became vice-chairman of Preparatory Committee for HKSAR of National People's Congress (NPC)

December 11, 1996  Elected as first Chief Executive of HKSAR

December 16, 1996  Appointed as first Chief Executive of HKSAR by State Council

July 1, 1997  Assumed office as Chief Executive of HKSAR
February 28, 2002  Reelected Chief Executive of HKSAR for a second term and assumed office on July 1

He was a member of 8th CPPCC National Committee and was elected as an additional member of 10th CPPCC National Committee in February 2005.
